Cloth tape is used for heavy-duty repair, sealing ductwork, bundling awkward loads, fixing carpet and matting, and cable runs at events. Its fabric backing gives it strength and tear-by-hand convenience that plastic tapes do not have.
Both are cloth-backed, but duct tape has a glossier coating and a stronger, more permanent adhesive, while gaffer tape has a matt finish and is formulated to peel away cleanly without residue. Events and AV work usually calls for gaffer; repair and sealing usually calls for duct.
